One Step Closer

As usual, I've failed to pay as much attention to this blog as I aim to. This blog was meant to practice short story writing in order to up my writing skills, but I haven't exactly had the time to get to that. Things have been hectic, as I'm sure happens in everyone else's lives. I'm not special when it comes to that, but I hate having to step away from my writing. It makes it that much harder to get back into it, and when I finally do, I'm pulled away to attend to other duties. It's a bit frustrating, but I suppose that's a life I should be prepared to live.
On the bright side, a lot has happened since I posted my short story Coded. I've started production classes (a little hard to juggle right now but I'll get the hang of it), I've made a couple short films with my group and started making some new friends, my boyfriend surprised me with tickets to see Florence and the Machine, and I've finished my book. Oh, what was that last one? I finished my book? Yes! You heard right! Finally, after roughly three years, I've finished Across Time. I'm currently editing the full manuscript and I'll be sending pieces of it out to be reviewed by a writing group my friend (also a writer) urged me to join. Hopefully, I'll be able to take their advice and improve my manuscript so I can start querying in a few months. Even if this doesn't exactly mean I'm on the track to be published, I can say that I finished a book, and that is an accomplishment I'm proud to say I've achieved. Perhaps with a little more perseverance, it'll be more than just a little manuscript, and my baby can grow up to be a published book.
Honestly, I have to say that throughout this journey, there are so many books I've read that have helped me get to this point. They teach me, guide me, and motivate me to better myself and my writing. They help me understand what someone's else's life could be like, and they even breathe life into someone who may not be real but seems that way. It's always so exciting to pick up a new book. I'm always giddy when I feel a crisp cover glide over my hands and when the scent of the pages fills my nose. There are so many worlds left to explore, and I can't wait to set my foot down on another writer's land of imagination and learn something new about storytelling. I highly recommend reading as much as you can in as many genres as you can. You could find something about yourself or your writing that you never would've discovered otherwise.
As is probably obvious by the existence of this blog, writing for a living is a huge dream of mine, and I'm sure many others share this. I keep trying to be realistic about the reality, that many can't even make it to that point, but then I look at those who have, and the only way I see it is that it's possible. Just because you've been turned down doesn't mean it's over. Whatever you do, keep writing, keep improving. The reward will be that much more satisfying in the end. If someone else can do it, so can you, no matter where you're at, no matter who you are. I've kept telling myself this for the past ten years that I've been writing, and I've told myself the same thing years before that when I had an obsession with art. That was my focus from age 3-17 and it motivated me enough to come up with original characters that began my journey as a writer at age 11 (and those characters will be featured in my next book series) and it also helped me develop my art skills enough to create realism portraits. Coming back around from that small tangent, my point is to never give up, no matter how hopeless or lost you might feel. Your journey has only just begun, and who knows where it might take you.
